Are You A Leader # 6

The sixth charasteristic of a spiritual leader:
6. Jesus released His disciples to serve God’s purposes. V 18
In John 17:18 Jesus said this, “As You sent Me into the world I have sent them into the world,” or as the Message says “In the same way You gave Me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world.”
The whole goal of parenting is to eventually release your children. From the moment they are born you are preparing them to be released in the world, not to hold on to them and micro manage and control their lives the rest of your life. This is the flip side to the protection point. Yes, as a dad I am responsible to protect my kids as they’re growing up.
But not to protect them from taking risks for the glory of God. Not to keep them from doing God’s will. You can be so over protective that you will not release your kids emotionally or maybe even physically to go out and do what God wants them to.
You say, “Sure, I want my kids to serve God, as long as they stay here in the area.”
Or “Yeah, I want my kids to do what God wants them to do, follow His plan and purpose for their life, as long as they don’t leave this area and they live right down the block.” As long as they don’t do something that’s dangerous where they could get killed, where they could be hurt.
It’s natural as parents not to want your kids to be hurt. But let me ask you this very frank question.
Are you willing to let God be God in your kid’s lives?
Or are you still trying to be God in their life. Many people try to control their kids after they get married. Anybody want to give a testimony on that one?
You’ve got to let them go. “For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.” It’s God’s plan for kids to leave and cleave. In other words, to begin new families. So you’ve got to let them go to serve God’s purposes.
