Are You A Leader # 7

The seventh responsibility of being a spiritual leader…
7. Jesus modeled commitment.
John 17: 19 is so important. “For their sake I dedicate Myself completely to You in order that they too may be truly dedicated to You.”
You cannot lead your kids farther spiritually than you are yourself.
So He says, “For their sake, for my kids sake, I dedicate myself completely to You so that they too will be completely dedicated to You.”
Very important question: What do your kids see that you are dedicated to?
What do your kids see that you are committed to?
- I suggest that you commit yourself commit yourself to knowing and loving God – worship.
- That you commit yourself to learning to love other people – fellowship.
- That you commit yourself to growing in Christ like character yourself,
- you commit to becoming a server and not just a taker in life, to serve other people unselfishly,
- you commit to sharing the good news. They will too.
Jesus realized that He wasn’t going to be with the disciples forever. And you’re not going to be with your kids forever. One day you’re going to die and you’re going to go on to heaven if you know Jesus Christ. Jesus knew that just in a matter of hours He would be hanging on cross. This is what He said, “Now I’m departing the world and I’m leaving them behind. I’m coming to You, holy Father. Keep them and care for them.”
That’s the prayer that you need to pray for your kids. Realize that parenting is a season. It isn’t going to last forever. You’ve got to make the most of it and it’s never too late to start leading. You may be a grandfather now. It’s never too late to start leading.
I’m going to pray two prayers. First for fathers ireading this blog. I want you to follow me in this prayer. You don’t have to say it aloud, just in your mind. If you’re a father I want you to pray this prayer. Then I’m going to pray a prayer for the rest of you.
Dads, in your heart say, “Dear God, I want to be a spiritual leader in my family. I admit I’ve got a lot to learn. I’ve got some catch up work to do. But I believe that You can give me the wisdom and the power I need to do this. So I dedicate myself completely to You to be the father and grandfather that You want me to be.”
Now the rest of you, you can pray this prayer, “Dear God, I want to be a spiritual leader too. In every situation You put me in. Help me to remember these responsibilities. Help me to support my father or my husband and all the fathers that I know. Give us strong families. Thank You for my church family here where in our church family we support each other no matter what segment or stage of life we’re in. We’re all in this together. Jesus, I want to be dedicated, totally to being used by You any way you wish. In Your name I pray. Amen.”
